Learn how to safely use and manage your RV's propane system.
β οΈ IMPORTANT REFILL REQUIREMENT
You must refill the propane tank to the same level as when you picked up the RV, or you will be charged a $50 service fee.
Understanding Frida's Propane System
Propane is an essential fuel for several appliances in your RV. Understanding how to safely operate and manage the propane system will help ensure a comfortable and worry-free journey.
Propane System Specifications:
- Tank Capacity: 16 gallons (68 lbs)
- Fill Location: Passenger side, to the right of the entry door
- Tank Type: Permanently mounted ASME tank (not removable)
Propane-Powered Appliances
Frida uses propane for the following appliances:
π₯ Outdoor Grill
The built-in outdoor grill connects directly to the RV's propane system.
Typical Usage: 0.5-1 lb per hour of cooking
π Pizza Kit (Optional)
The optional outdoor pizza oven attachment uses propane for high-heat cooking.
Typical Usage: 1-2 lbs per hour of cooking
𧣠Furnace/Heater
The RV's heating system for maintaining a comfortable interior temperature.
Typical Usage: 0.5-1 lb per hour
πΏ Water Heater
Heats water for showering, washing dishes, and other uses.
Typical Usage: 0.5 lb per hour
Operating the Propane System
Turning On the Propane
- Ensure all propane appliances are turned OFF before opening the main valve.
- Open the access panel on the passenger side where the propane fill is located.
- Locate the propane shut-off valve (typically a red, yellow, or black knob).
- Turn the valve counter-clockwise (to the left) to open the propane flow.
- Listen for any hissing sounds that might indicate a leak. If you hear hissing, close the valve immediately and seek assistance.
Turning Off the Propane
- Turn off all propane appliances first.
- Go to the propane tank shutoff valve.
- Turn the valve clockwise (to the right) until closed.
- This should be done when the RV will not be in use for an extended period, during refueling, or in case of emergency.
SAFETY WARNING: Always turn off the propane supply at the tank when:
- The RV is in motion
- Refueling the RV at a gas station
- Entering a tunnel
- Parking in an enclosed garage
Checking Propane Levels
Frida is equipped with a propane gauge on the control panel inside the RV. However, these gauges can sometimes be inaccurate. Here are some ways to check your propane level:
Using the Gauge
- Locate the propane level indicator on the RV's main control panel.
- The gauge typically shows levels as: Empty, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and Full.
- Note that RV propane gauges are not always precise and may show approximate levels.
Manual Check Method
For a more accurate check:
- Pour warm (not hot) water down the side of the propane tank.
- Run your hand down the tank. The tank will feel cool to the touch where there is propane inside and warm where it's empty.
- The temperature change will indicate the approximate propane level.
PRO TIP: Your propane will last much longer if you use electric alternatives when hooked up to shore power. For example, use the provided space heater instead of the propane furnace when at a campsite with electrical hookups to conserve propane.
Propane Refilling Procedure
When your propane level gets low (1/4 tank or less), you should refill it. Here's how:
- Locate a propane filling station. Many gas stations, camping stores, U-Haul locations, and some Walmart stores offer propane refilling services.
- Turn off all propane appliances inside the RV.
- Shut off the propane at the main valve.
- Drive to the propane filling station.
- The attendant will fill your tankβthis is not self-service in most locations.
- After filling, wait until you're parked at your destination before turning the propane back on.
Finding Propane Refill Stations:
You can find propane refill stations using apps like:
- GasBuddy (filter for stations with propane)
- AllStays Camp & RV
- RV Parky
- Google Maps (search for "propane refill near me")
IMPORTANT REMINDER: You must return the RV with the propane tank refilled to the same level as when you received it, or you will be charged a $50 service fee. We recommend getting a receipt from your propane refill as proof of service.
Propane Safety
Detecting a Propane Leak
Propane has a distinct rotten egg smell due to an added odorant. If you smell propane:
- Turn off all flames and ignition sources immediately (stove, heater, etc.).
- Turn off the propane at the main tank valve.
- Open all windows and doors for ventilation.
- Exit the RV and call for assistance if the smell persists.
- Do not turn on any electrical devices, as they could create a spark.
Propane Detector
Frida is equipped with a propane detector that will sound an alarm if propane is detected in the air. If the alarm sounds:
- Evacuate the RV immediately.
- If safe to do so, turn off the propane at the main tank.
- Open windows and doors for ventilation (if you can do so safely).
- Do not return to the RV until the alarm stops and you can no longer smell propane.
- If the smell persists, call for assistance.
Propane Conservation Tips
To maximize your propane supply during your trip:
- Use electric when available: When connected to shore power, use electric appliances instead of propane ones.
- Be mindful of heating: The furnace consumes the most propane. Use extra blankets or electric space heaters (when connected to shore power) to reduce furnace use.
- Efficient cooking: Preheat the grill for only as long as necessary, and turn it off immediately after use.
- Water heater usage: Only turn on the water heater 20-30 minutes before you need hot water, and turn it off when not in use.
- Check for leaks: Make sure all connections are tight to prevent waste.
Troubleshooting Propane Issues
Problem |
Possible Cause |

Check vents, ensure propane is on, verify thermostat settings |
SAFETY FIRST: If you're unsure about any aspect of the propane system or experience problems you can't resolve, don't experiment. Turn off the propane at the main valve and contact us for assistance. Propane is safe when handled properly but can be dangerous if mishandled.
