Using the Propane Stove

The 3-burner propane stove allows you to cook just like at home, but it requires proper operation for safety.

Stove Operation

  1. Propane check: Ensure propane is turned on at the tanks outside the RV.
  2. Ventilation: Always use the range hood fan when cooking to remove odors, moisture, and combustion gases.
  3. Lighting the burner:
    • Push in the control knob for the desired burner and turn it to the "LITE" position.
    • While holding the knob in, use a lighter or match to ignite the burner.
    • Once lit, continue holding the knob in for 5 seconds, then release.
    • Adjust the flame to desired level.
  4. Turning off: Turn the knob to the "OFF" position when finished.
SAFETY WARNING: Never leave the stove unattended while in use. Keep flammable materials (paper towels, dish cloths, etc.) away from burners. Always turn off propane at the source when not in use for extended periods.

Cooking Tips for RV Stoves

Using the Refrigerator

The RV refrigerator runs on the 12V battery system, and will stay cold as long as the batteries are charged.

Refrigerator Operation

  1. Power source: The refrigerator runs on the RV's 12V battery system.
  2. Temperature control: Set the temperature using the thermostat dial (1-5, with 5 being the coldest).
  3. Level requirement: The refrigerator needs to be reasonably level to operate efficiently.
  4. Pre-cooling: Turn on the refrigerator several hours before loading it with food.

EFFICIENCY TIP: For maximum efficiency, pre-cool food and beverages before placing them in the RV refrigerator. Always allow hot food to cool before refrigerating. Organize items to allow for air circulation.

Refrigerator Limitations and Tips

IMPORTANT: The refrigerator runs on the RV's battery system. Be sure to keep the batteries charged either by connecting to shore power, running the generator periodically, or driving (which charges the batteries through the alternator).

Using the Microwave

The microwave provides quick heating and cooking options but requires shore power or generator to operate.

Microwave Operation

  1. Power source: Ensure you're connected to shore power or running the generator.
  2. Food placement: Place food in the center of the turntable.
  3. Power settings: Use appropriate power levels for different foods.
  4. Time setting: Set cooking time using the number pad.
  5. Start: Press the "Start" button.
POWER TIP: The microwave draws about 1,500 watts at full power. If you're using other high-draw appliances simultaneously (like A/C), you might trip a breaker. Consider turning off other appliances temporarily when using the microwave.

Kitchen Sink and Water System

The kitchen sink operates using the RV water system, which can be connected to either the internal fresh water tank or an external city water connection.

Sink Operation

  1. Water source: Ensure water pump is on if using the internal tank, or that you're connected to city water.
  2. Hot water: The water heater should be on for at least 15 minutes for hot water.
  3. Conservation: Use water efficiently as the fresh water tank and grey water tank have limited capacity.
  4. Drainage: All sink water goes to the grey water tank, which will need to be emptied when full.
WATER CONSERVATION TIP: Use a dishpan in the sink to catch water for washing dishes. When finished, use the water for flushing the toilet to reduce fresh water consumption and grey water production.

RV Kitchen Organization

Efficient organization is crucial in an RV kitchen. Here are some tips for maximizing your space:

Storage Area Best Used For Organization Tips
Upper Cabinets Lightweight items, dry goods Use stackable containers, tension rods to prevent shifting
Lower Cabinets Heavier items, pots and pans Nest cookware, use slide-out organizers
Drawers Utensils, kitchen tools Drawer dividers, non-slip liners
Counter Space Food prep Use sink covers for extra space, collapsible tools

Troubleshooting Kitchen Appliances

Stove Won't Light

  1. Check propane tank levels and ensure valves are open
  2. Verify propane detector isn't showing an alert
  3. Ensure the burner holes aren't clogged
  4. Try lighting with a longer match or lighter
  5. Hold the knob in longer after lighting (10+ seconds)

Refrigerator Not Cooling

  1. Check that the RV is level
  2. Verify power source (12V battery system)
  3. Ensure vents aren't blocked
  4. Turn temperature control to maximum setting
  5. Allow 4-6 hours for the refrigerator to cool down

Microwave Not Working

  1. Verify shore power connection or generator operation
  2. Check circuit breaker hasn't tripped
  3. Ensure door is completely closed
  4. Press "Reset" or "Clear" button
  5. Try reducing power draw by turning off other appliances

No Water at Sink

  1. Check fresh water tank level
  2. Verify water pump is turned on (for tank water)
  3. Check city water connection (if using hookups)
  4. Ensure water filters aren't clogged
  5. Check for frozen lines in cold weather
FINAL TIP: RV kitchens require adaptation from home cooking, but with a little creativity, you can prepare amazing meals. Plan simple one-pot meals for travel days and more elaborate dishes for days when you're stationary.
